About Us
To uplift the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by fostering independence, enhancing quality of life, and promoting community engagement through programs rooted in local culture and values.
Our Mission
We believe that every individual, regardless of ability, possesses inherent value, and with support, they can lead lives rich in purpose.
We envision a world where all individuals, with and without disabilities, live in Lokahi – a unity that celebrates each person’s unique strengths - and supports them in leading fulfilling lives.
Our Vision
Our Values
Our commitment to respect and compassion is guided by ALOHA, embodying kindness (Akahai), unity (Lokahi), honesty (‘Olu‘olu), humility (Ha‘aha‘a), and perseverance (Ahonui) in all we do.
Our Story
Kākou Club was founded in 2024 by Sarah Sheppard to contribute to the community that provided her “sister” Marie with so much joy, pride, friendship, and fulfillment.
Marie McDevitt, born with Down Syndrome, is Sarah’s aunt by birth, but felt more like a sibling, having shared their home for most of Sarah’s life. Marie was such a gift to her family & friends, bringing so much joy, laughter, and life lessons to anyone she crossed paths with.
If you met Marie, she would immediately tell you about PEP! PEP, Program for Exceptional People, is the day program for people with disabilities she attended during the week. She was so proud of her program, friends, and accomplishments. Her life certainly revolved around it.
One day at age 57, Marie came home from PEP and asked if she could become a cheerleader. Sign-ups were happening now, and “It’s my only chance! Please, please, please!” Soon enough, Marie was traveling with her team to cheerleading competitions. Marie is a true testament that with proper support, great things are possible!
Ever since Marie’s passing in 2020, Sarah felt the call to support the disabled community. She wanted to create a home away from home that lifts up members with empowerment and purpose, and connects them with their communities.
Sarah believes everyone deserves to know someone with disabilities, valuing each other’s uniqueness makes us all better members of society. We are all one here on this earth trying to find happiness, and our communities should look and feel that way.
